..My Free Cell addiction

Posted on 16 September 2008 and tagged .

Help I have a Free Cell addictionAaaaaahhh Free Cell. It’s nice and relaxing: listening to music, thinking, and playing Free Cell.

My first exam is in a month, and this makes me weep: I just can’t play stupid card games now!

…Also I’ve realised I’m far too obsessed. Seriously, after a few hours of playing I’ll think, “All right, I should really stop” and close the window. This is followed by me thinking, “What’ll I do now? OOOH FREE CELL.” And I’ll play for another hour.

The Free Cell has to stop.

All links to to it have been deleted from my Start men. And just to prove how serious I am, see that screencap? I googled it.

DAY ONE

While listening to a lecture recording, I automatically go to open a game of Free Cell. This is a habit – I think that by pretending to listen, I’ll get points for looking like I’m studying, right? Good luck getting into second year Law, Becka! But this time I notice it’s not on my Start menu. It’s an odd feeling and my hands need something to do. I wonder if maybe I should take up smoking, but I’m doing the right thing, and typing this instead.

I think I am onto some excellent journalism-type stuff right here.

DAY TWO

Some mornings I have a two hour break between lectures. During this time I’ve been
reading Critic, checked the sites I like to visit every day… then… What now? It’s when studying is boring and you don’t know where your friends are – this is the time for playing Free Cell. Instead I thought I’d write about it, so here I am. Success!

so far…!

I’ve discovered I’m developing the habit of writing down everything I’m thinking… rather than just thinking it while playing sweet, sweet Free Cell (I’m sorry, world). At least I’m off to a good start…. somehow.

GLASS SKIN (Dir en grey, 2008)

Glass Skin (Dir en grey, 2008)I LOOKED FORWARD TO THIS SINGLE – even though the cover is very ugly. Man. Look at it. I don’t even think it suits the song much, but ahh well.

Glass Skin

First is the “Oh hey, how often do we get a nice Dir en grey song with piano in it?” It’s so smooth and beautiful. Definitely not heavier or darker than Marrow of a Bone, at any rate. KAORU LET ME DOWN. I would have liked to see them go even more crazy, bahaha.

Glass Skin has just the right amount of angst, but still with this lightness to it… Almost upbeat, especially for Dir en grey, anyway. You can hear easily Toshiya for once, and Kyo is singing. I especially love him during the verses when his voice is low and doesn’t seem quite so strained.

Overall, this is a welcome change and I love listening to it, but I can’t help feeling like it’s missing a certain something-something which DOZING GREEN had.

UNDECIDED

I don’t know how they could take a song that I loooveee madly and mess around with it. The beginning doesn’t help me – in the original Kyo’s voice is all soft and he sounds like he could be dying. I love it. Here it’s just singing, so this song doesn’t interest me until the chorus happens. It’s warmer somehow, and I’ll blame Toshiya for it (since yes, you can hear him in this song, too!), haha. Kyo’s voice is more crisp, and the song’s generally a lot more complex. There was some guitarwork which I think I’d have appreciated more if it was in an entirely new song. But really, I this version because they kept the end mostly the same. I would have cried if they didn’t.

Agitated Screams of Maggots (unplugged)

I’ve always wanted to hear this, and now that I have… I think it’ll probably steal the limelight from Glass Skin. It’s lulz. First I laughed. Silently – when you’re trapped in a residential college you’re very careful of things like this. After the initial shock, my expression was probably one that was very horrified. I think I died a little bit.
The screaming (and to call it that is an understatement)…. The piano….. The single is worth listening to for this alone. Seriously. The end was nicely done, although 2:15 to 2:30 is my favourite part – he sounds like his own growling terrifies him.

Kyo is insane. Totally fucking insane. ♥

Ryoujoku no Ame (Live)

After that last song, it’s hard to be excited about a live track. It’s nothing out of the ordinary, stays true to the song… but you get the bonus of hearing Kyo being a little more insane than on the album version. Awesome, no?

thrilling conclusion!

I’m less excited about this than DOZING GREEN in general. I was also pretty certain that this single wouldn’t be too shocking… and I was right, though by no means was it boring. So based on this? I’m thinking Dir en grey’s upcoming album will be elegant and lovely, and still scare the hell out of you. I can’t wait.

‘Hilarious’ semi-summary of my year

Posted on 6 September 2008 and tagged .

Everyone on my floor had to fill out this profile to go in the yearbook. This was mine (the unedited version, yus!).

WHAT WOULD YOU BE RE-INCARNATED AS:

Persian longhair (…better than a wombat, anyway…)

FAVOURITE FLOOR MOMENT

  • April Fools – condom’ing the floor above us. I mean, that wasn’t us.
  • ‘Parties’ in the kitchen – complete with group Bebo stalking sessions.
We’re pretty extreme here, yes we are.
  • Chasing people on their towel runs.
  • Visiting the dairy in pyjamas and slippers at 10pm. It was cold!
  • The Mentos and Diet Coke experiment in the kitchen.
  • Being fire hazards.

LIFE AMBITION

  • Hook up with [insert lecturer's name here]. ;D
  • Break Free Cell addiction.

MOST MEMORABLE QUOTE:

“LISTEN TO ME I’M A LAW STUDENT.”

ANY WORDS OF WISDOM

  • Try to avoid boys’ rooms at 3 in the morning. Ahaha. D:
  • You can never have enough coinage for vending machines.
  • Lock yourself in your room and play Free Cell for hours. It makes people think that you study non-stop and before you know it people will think you’re as brainy as I am.
  • If it’s pretty, expensive, and you don’t know where you’ll wear it, just tell yourself it’ll be good for formal dinners.
  • Love Love (this shop in the Meridian mall) is love.
  • Lime green ties are the ultimate.

Hi, I’m an idiot

Posted on 1 September 2008 and tagged .

So I was finally motivated enough to listen to these Legal History lecture recordings. I took a detour on the way to iTunes though, which involved deciding to check out my site… just to make sure everything looked all right since the layout change – because yes, finally a layout change! How exciting!

I uploaded this one from home, while on mid-semester break, using a laptop which only had Internet Explorer 7. Mysteriously, my own laptop doesn’t like dial-up anymore – but then again, nor do I. The coding for that little Flickr bit was tweaked to suit this layout, and I didn’t even think that it should be tested on other browsers.

Users of Opera and Firefox, forgive me~! If you’re desperate, try Safari or Internet Explorer 7. I’m just confessing because knowing that my site looks all wonky right now is going to haauunt me. Right through the week. You have no idea.

I’m not back at university-land, and I’ve never been able to get the FTP to work on the wireless here. Or MSN Messenger for that matter.. I’m such a pro at this technology thing. But at any rate, changing the stylesheet will be tricky (and I’m also aware that there are some other pages which need to be changed as well)… and I probably won’t be able to do so for a while. But I will, or I’ll go totally crazy.

In the meantime, I listen to Legal History lecture recordings. I say this a lot, and then never do, but I totally mean it this time. ;D

I'm a mediocre law student at Otago and future cat lady. This is my blog thingy.
